Dot Plot

Kia ora in Te Ngahere we have been doing maths. For maths we have been learning about dot plots. We got a sheet of data, the data was about how far room 1 can throw a tennis ball. This data was already in a dot plot but there was more data that wasn’t in a dot plot that was room 2s data. For room 1s data I found out that the lowest throw was 3 and the farthest throw was 19. For room 2’s data the lowest number was 6 and the highest number was 20. I really enjoyed this because I learnt what the word range means. When we first started this I thought range meant how far the ball went but it actually meant, how much is in between the lowest and highest number, for example the range of room 1s data was 16 because the longest throw for room 1 was 19 and the lowest throw was 3 so you just take away 3 from 19 and you get 16. The part that I think I could of done better was to look at the teachers DLO so that my DLO would be more understandable for the people who have no clue what a dot plot is and what I was talking about. When our teacher did it she made it so clear by showing step by step what to do and pointed to what she was talking about. Have you ever made a dot plot before?

New Maths

Kia ora, in Te Ngahere this week we have started a new type of maths. We have started making graphs, the reason why we are doing this is because it is going to help us with the science fair this year with presenting our data. First, we all jumped into the groups that the teachers put us in and all wrote down our age, eye color, how many siblings we have, how we got to school on a piece of paper. After that, we gathered all of the data and made a table. We then made a graph. The graphs that I made was a pie graph and bar graph because those are the two graphs that I understand most. I really enjoyed this because it was really interesting and I haven’t done anything to do with graphs in a long time. The thing that I think I could of done better was coming up with better graphs to present my data instead of just using the regular graphs like a bar graph or a pie graph, but then sometimes the regular graphs are better to use to present your data because they are easier to understand. What is your favorite graph?

Maths DLO For Expanding Numbers

This week in Te Ngahere in maths we have been doing work around expanding numbers. We made a DLO to show our learning in a creative way. In our DLO we had to explain what we were learning about (expanding numbers), explain how to expand a number, what columns they are in and why. I really enjoyed doing this because now I know how to expand a number but also how to read numbers better and more confidently. The thing that would of made our DLO more earlier for my group would of been if we got to practice our scrip a bit more. Have you ever expanded a number before? This is my DLO:

My New Understandings for Maths:

In Te Ngahere this week we have been learning maths, not every person in the class were doing the same activity. We were all in different groups, we are in groups with other people that are learning the same maths as us. I am in a group called star.. My group was learning how to put decimals numbers into place value. I think that is a good strategy fo me to learning because it’s helping me with my decimals and place value. I really enjoyed doing this, at the start when we first had a go at it I was really confused because I didn’t understand what I was getting teached but then the person that was teaching us started saying it step by step and slowing down to make sure we know what she is saying. Next time if we do this again I will tell the person teaching me to wait and ask if I can show them an example to see if I understand them. Have you ever done turning decimals into place value?

Stunning Measurement DLO That Will Help You Learn How to Measure

In Te Ngahere we have been learning about measurement. With learning about measurement we also learnt a lot about converting millimeters to centimeters and centimeters to meters. We were measuring objects as big as the basketball court and as small as a piece of paper. We had an A4 piece of paper full of objects that we had to measure. I found measuring the basketball court a lot more interesting to do than the other ones because we had something more to measure. I really enjoyed having a go at measurement because it was fun. I think that next time I could work on my converting millimeters to centimeters and centimeters to meters. Do you find measurement very interesting?

Division’s Accomplished

In Te Ngahere yesterday I finish all of my division. I have been working on them and really trying to get them finished and yesterday I finished them. Before I finished them all I had to learn were my 7’s then I was finished. I really liked learning my divisions because they are helping me with my maths and they are handy to know. The thing that I found hard was remembering 56 divided by 7 is 8 and 84 divided by 7 is 12. Next time when I need to use my division to solve a maths problem I will know my division and they will help me a lot. Do you know all of your divsion? Bye!

Learning New Maths With Te Ngahere:

In Te Ngahere we have groups for maths. There are group 1,2,3,4 and task 4. I am in group 3 and the activity that we have started is called roar. We were learning to multiply by multiples of 10. The thing that I found hard was getting the hang of doing it and making sure everyone in my group payed attention. Tomorrow when I do this again I will know what to do and it will help me get it done faster. Is maths your favourite subject at school? Bye!

Learning New Maths With Me

In Te Ngahere we have started a new type of maths, we are learning about time, mass & length. My maths group are figuring out how much a meter is on our body, and we are also learning about grams and what weighs 100 grams in our classroom. We have to see how close our estimation is to the real answer. I really enjoy doing this because it is fun. I like it because me and my group all do even parts of the work. The thing that I found hard at first was writing my statement right because I kept on writing way to much detail when I was just meant to write down the data. Tomorrow when we do it again I will remember not to add too much detail and just add the data that I need. Last week we were doing maths with our teacher Whaea Shanna in the whare, now we are doing maths with our other teacher Whaea Chrissy in our classroom. Do you learn maths in different learning spaces? Bye!

Tips You Need To Know When You Do Fraction Frenzy

In Te Ngahere this week we have been doing maths. Our maths that we were doing was called fraction frenzy. What we had to do was find equivalent fractions. Equivalent fractions are fractions that are the same as each other. I really enjoyed this because I found it fun and it had some challenges for me. I also like learning about factions and getting better and better at them. The thing that I found hard was trying to find equivalent fractions to the high numbers because they were a lot harder than the small numbers. Next time if we do this again I will try to come up with easy starters then just count up in one’s trying to find the answer. I hope we do this again sometime this year so I get another try at it and hopefully I am much better at it. Did you know how to find an a equivalent fraction before you saw my post? Bye!

The Incredible math D.L.O

This week we have been doing math, the type of math we have been doing is angles. We have been learning about right, acute, obtuse, straight, reflex and a full rotation angles. When we were doing this, I really enjoyed it because I learnt that an obtuse angle is greater than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees.. What was your favourite angle to learn about? Ka kite!

My Amazing Math D.L.O

This week we have been doing math about fractions, decimals and percentages. In Te Ngahere we had to make a D.L.O about our maths, I made my D.L.O about fractions, decimals and percentages. I had a lot of fun doing this because I learnt something new, what I didn’t enjoy was doing the fraction part because I don't enjoy fractions but I learnt to do them and now I like fractions. Next time I do something like this I hope I am much better at doing the fraction part. Do you like fractions?

Incredible Maths

This week in Te Ngahere we have been learning a new way to help us with our maths. We got into groups of four and we were given sixteen cards and we had to share out the cards evenly amongst ourselves. Before we got into groups we had to follow these rules. No talking, no hand signals and no taking anyone else’s cards. On the cards that we had were numbers, dots, tiles, words and shapes. What we were learning was to put them in to groups. For an example if you have a triangle, a piece of paper with three dots, the number three and a piece of paper with three tiles shaded in you will have a match and you are done. I really enjoyed doing this maths because it is a lot of fun but the thing I didn’t enjoy was that it was really hard because we couldn’t talk to each other or communicate. Have you learnt any new maths this term?

maths

Maths: In maths I have been learning about doubling, halving & Multiplication problems, we had two numbers and we had to half the big number and the double the little number. (Example) if we had 5x14 we would have to half the number that chose is the best number to plus and half. I picked the 14 because I think it was the best number her is my example. Which is the 14 so I 7 then we plus the 5 witch is then 10 and then after that we times the 7 and the 10 together which is 70 so then we have our answer. We learnt that you really do need to learn your times tables because when it comes to something like this like this they really come in handy.

Maths DLO

In Te Ngahere we have been making maths DLO’s around multiplication problems with doubling and halving. In our math’s DLO’s we had to show how we worked it out, how it works, when you would use this strategy and what it is. What I think I did well was when I had to explain the strategy and how the strategy works. Another thing that I enjoyed and felt good was when I finished explaining the examples. Next time I think I should listen to the teacher when she tries to tell us to look on the success criteria and also when she tries to help me I should take her advice. Blog you later!

Geometry

In Te Maunga we have made a google drawing about geometry. When we were doing geometry I learnt about parallel line and a perpendicular. The thing I found hard was finding out the right number of edges, corners and faces.

Jade's Maths goals

Te Maunga we have been setting our own maths goals on a google drawing. The success criteria was that we had to make a google drawing and put our maths goals on it.

Maths solving

In Te Maunga well have been working in groups. In our groups we have been solving maths problems and using talk moves. Maths problem solving is when you have big problems and solve them that involves skip counting, addition and times tables. In my maths group I don’t think we work that will together because we don’t collaborate and we don’t much listen to what our group is saying. But at the top of everything we don’t use the talk moves that much.

Fractions

W.A.L.T. to make a fractions wall. First we had to cut twelve pieces of paper the same length.  First we glued one whole strip, then we folded another strip in 1/2 before cutting it in half and gluing it on our wall. We repeated this process in 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7, 1/8, 1/9, 1/10, 1/12 this. We saw patterns when we cut 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/12. We saw another pattern when we cut 1/3, 1/6 and  1/9.  We saw another pattern with 1/5 and 1/10.  When we were making it we had to make sore that all the strips were exactly the same length as the first one at the top.
